Lights Out On Climate Change: Earth Hour 2008
Posted on Monday, March 31st, 2008 at 3:03 pmThis past Saturday from 8-9pm, towns and cities across the world went dark. No, not mass blackouts. Earth Hour 2008. A choice, made by individuals and institutions, to turn off lights for an hour in a global effort to raise awareness of climate change.
Earth Hour, which originated last year in Sydney, Australia, was marked this weekend in over 35 cities spanning five continents. While the event conserved a modest amount of energy, the primary idea, according to organizers, was to demonstrate the power of and need for collective action in addressing the climate crisis.
Missed out? Earth Day 2009 is only 363 days away! Check out Earth Hour for more information about the Earth Hour mission– and to learn how to get your city on board.

It is wonderful to see that some chose to participate in Earth hour. I think that is a bit different from forcing others to save energy. Now the war on Iraq makes sense to me. The reason of our war was not the WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) but rather forcing Iraqis to save energy. Their government (which we support) provides them with 2 to 3 hours of power daily (some more some less) hence we are saving the earth from 21 to 22 hours of Electricity usage daily. To prove that we are very serious about earth, we also managed to raise the oil price in an oil producing country, to prevent Iraqis from using Electricity producing Diesel generators. Now, who can deny that saving on energy saves the earth?
