Look the whole bag thing is as many of you have mentioned "easy". Even if you don't drive. Even if I forget my bag I have the cashier put my goods back in my cart and bag my own at the car. If you forget your bag then only buy what you can carry or stuff in your oversized purse or pockets, this always helps me keep to my budget.
I admit I still get the look! Most can't understand why I don't need a bag I just say I don't want one and proceed to pile my goods in any available space.
Additionally I will reuse any container, especially shopping bags from department stores or fancy bags that I keep in my car. Paper shopping bags are great because they are durable and last a long time.

Gabrielle: The pocket idea is great -- unless you do not have a car. As a car-free student, I try to remember to pack my cloth grocery totes into my packpack, if I think that I will be making a grocery run later in the day. Unfortunately, it is not always that easy to plan ahead.

Kudos to Gabrielle - I'm fully on board as well.

Great website for a variety of reusable bags that I'd recommend - reusablebags.com (duh). We started using these a couple of years ago and will never turn back. Aside from being an environmental disaster, plastic bags are much less user friendly than many of the reusable bags you can buy today (I've never had one of our bags rip on the way to the car and spill groceries all over the parking lot).

Bringing your own canvas bags to the store is so easy it's silly. You know how car doors have "pockets" in them? I keep three canvas tote bags in there, and when I pull up to the Whole Foods, or the Target, or Kroger, or anywhere that is going to offer me plastic, I carry them in with me. One bag or three. I carry them in and proudly say, "I have my own bag."

Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment will help local residents make the transition to reusable bags with our Living Green:BYOBag campaign which will be launched at our annual meeting. Join us at the Hilton Arlington at Ballston on March 6. We'll have spiffy reusable bags with our new logo and lots of information about living green. As one of those people holding up the lines at the farmers' market every Saturday, I'm looking forward to everyone learning that we can stop using either plastic or paper.
