Today, October 15, marks the first annual Blog Action Day. Started by an Australian blogger, Collis Ta’eed, 15,861 bloggers from around the world have pledged to blog about the environment today.

Since this Carbon Conscious Consumer blog tends to focus on issues surrounding that campaign, let me take this opportunity to promote some of the other fantastic programs New Dream has been working on.

Helping you make responsible, conscious choices in your life is a big part of New Dream. The Conscious Consumer Marketplace provides you with great advice on responsible, environmental products. As the green market expands with each passing day, a reliable guide to what’s really better better for the planet becomes increasingly valuable. New Dream is undertaking a massive expansion of the current site to make it the most comprehensive and engaging responsible purchasing guide in the country. It will feature products and company information and rankings, user reviews, and directories of local retailers carrying each product.

For those celebrating a marriage, graduation, birth, or any other major life milestone that might have gift giving associated with it, we have launched the Alternative Gift Registry. Here individuals can let their families and friends know about gifts they truly need or want, whether it’s a night babysitting, coupons to the local organic grocer, or an energy-efficient appliance.

In fall 2006, New Dream officially launched the Responsible Purchasing Network (RPN), a membership organization comprised of the leading public and private institutions committed to greening the market. The network provides technical assistances and referrals that allow these institutions to share resources and develop polices, practices, and contracts based on highly credible and cutting edge standards. RPN’s web-based resposible purchasing guides for high-impact products such as vehicles, computers, office electronics, green cleaning products, and pain offer in-depth analysis of available choices and help purchasers make informed decisions. In a recent project, New Dream enabled the State of Wisconsin to undertake the largest state purchase of renewable energy to date!
