What about fizzy water?

Posted on Thursday, October 11th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

I’ll admit it: I love sparkling water. Add a lime slice to a glass on a hot day, and I’m a happy camper. That’s why I was so excited to find this today: Soda-Club!

The Soda-Club company touts these machines as environmentally friendly. According to the site, their soda maker:

  • Reduce Packaging: Reusable Bottles
  • No bottles or cans to recycle or throw away
  • Saves thousands of containers for a family of four in a year
  • Carbonating bottles last for three years

Additionally, “By operating completely on power supplied by the compressed air in the carbonator — an easily renewable fuel source — Soda-Club does not contribute to environmental pollution made by batteries.  Empty carbonators are returned to Soda-Club to be cleaned, inspected and refilled with CO2 drawn naturally from the air. Carbonators are reusable as long as they remain in good condition.”

So, breaking the bottled water habit doesn’t mean you have to give up your sparkling water.  I’ll be investing in one of these in the near future and will let you know how it goes.  Do you have one of these machines?  Let us know how you like it in the comments!

Also, for those of you who drink pop (soda to most of you), Soda-Club also provides concentrated flavor mixes.  Even more ways to cut down on waste!

Wow, what a cool product. I’m addicted to seltzer and never thought to try to just make it myself at home. I just ordered this and can’t wait to try it and cut down on all those bottles in my house!!!

Yup - I’ve been using this exact product for 2 years and I LOVE it!!! Easy to use, so much better for our earth, and very versatile! The kids are drinking seltzer all the time now. For a treat, we mix in orange juice for a spritzer.

I’ve heard that there are health concerns with drinking carbonated beverages (soda water/seltzer included). Any comments on this? Would it be any different when you carbonate your own H20?

my understanding about the health concerns of carbonated beverages (and I am by no means an expert, this is just from information I have read mostly online and high school chemistry) is that carbonated beverages are acidic (low pH) which tends to be destructive to teeth enamel increasing the risk of cavities. Dissolved CO2 in water does produce carbonic acid but commercial sodas also have other acids added as well (a friend of mine who is in the construction business told a story of when there was an accidental spill of the raw syrup from a major bottling company onto the cement foundation at a construction site he was required to replace that section of foundation because the syrup was known to dissolve concrete.)
I don’t know if the acidity has other health effects past the teeth.

here’s a quick reference about the formation of carbonic acid in carbonated beverages:
